MHSAA is a private non-profit company and has not received any taxes from Michigan or the federal government. Its membership system consists of public, private and local schools, and does not pay membership fees or tournament admission fees. It is the only one of the two such associations in the country that does not accept school membership fees or tournament admission fees. Through its Education Committee, member schools voluntarily participate in the MHSAA every year, and pass formal resolutions to pledge to observe and implement the common rules of the education movement. MHSAA allows customers to conduct a complete inter-school sports program, and can participate in the regular season with MHSAA member schools without participating in the MHSAA.
