In 1990, the non-profit Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center was established to assist in bridging the gap between the available funding and the actual costs of operating an avalanche center, as well as the rising demand from customers and the growing demand for information and education. They were shielded from year-to-year shifts in USFS funding by this development. The majority of Utah's avalanche education and awareness efforts are currently carried out by the nonprofit UAC, which also funds and oversees the partnership with the USFS.
