The Ledger's history can be traced back to Aug. 22, 1924, when Sam Farage founded The Lakeland Evening Ledger under Ledger Publishing Co. Three years later, Lakeland Ledger Publishing Co. bought one of its rivals, the star, as a morning paper. A year later, when the owners found it unprofitable to run two sheets of paper from a factory, they merged the newspapers to form Lakeland ledger and the star. In 1941, The name was abbreviated to The Lakeland Ledger. In 1967 it was further reduced to The Ledger. Several owners controlled the paper until 1970, when the New York Times Co. bought it, Ocala and Gainesville newspapers and other media interests. In May 2012, Halifax Media Group, based in Daytona beach, bought it and the rest of the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group chain and sold it again.
