Southern States is one of the largest agricultural retail and service cooperatives in the United States. Founded in 1923, the Richmond, Virginia-based cooperative serves more than 1,200 retail stores in 21 states. They offer a variety of agricultural inputs including: fertilizers, seeds, livestock feed, pet food, animal health supplies and petroleum products, among other items. At the time, Virginia Seed Services (VSS), a Virginia farmer, was unable to purchase seeds that were guaranteed to be grown in the Commonwealth. VSS began distributing feed in 1925, increased fertilizer services in 1926, and began processing agricultural and petroleum products in a few years. Today, as one of the largest farmer cooperatives in the United States, the South recognizes Southern States's past and looks forward to an exciting future.
