In 1969, Howell began making accessories after receiving an art degree from Goldsmiths ' College. Her handmade beads and knitwear attracted the attention of Vogue and other fashion magazines, encouraging her to continue designing outfits. Howell started MARGARET HOWELL in a common apartment in Blackheath, southeast London. In 2002, the company moved its London office and flagship store to Wigmore Street, in collaboration with architect William Russell. The retail area sells men's and women's clothing collections, accessories, books and furniture. The founder has won several awards - in 2013, Howell received an honorary professor at the School of Creative Arts at the University of London.
