Founded in 1958 by Donald Wentzel, the Maple Leaf Farms was originally a small duck company in northern Indiana, dedicated to producing "reliable quality" products. In the first year, the company only produced 280,000 ducks. By 1964, its annual duck production had grown rapidly to more than 1 million. Winterzel firmly believes that if properly managed, the U.S. duck industry can make significant progress. Although Winzel died in 1968, he passed on the vision to his son-in-law, Terry Tucker, who has been working in the company since 1963. Under Tucker's leadership, the company has taken several strategic measures to develop its business and has become more vertically integrated to become a market leader.
