The London Coliseum, situated in St. Martin’s Lane, Westminster, is one of the largest and most luxurious theatres in London’s West End. Designed by the renowned architect Frank Matcham for impresario Sir Oswald Stoll, it was opened on June 24, 1904, as the London Coliseum Theatre of Varieties. The theatre was envisioned as the "people's palace of entertainment," featuring a lavish foyer and circulation areas with marble facings, and a vast 3-tier auditorium adorned with eclectic classical details. The Coliseum boasts a wide proscenium arch, 55 feet wide and 34 feet high, and a stage that is 80 feet wide with a throw of over 115 feet to the back of the balcony. It was one of the first theatres to feature electric lighting and a triple revolving stage, although this feature was rarely used. Over the years, the London Coliseum has hosted a variety of performances, including American musicals, opera, and dance productions. In 1968, it became the home of Sadler’s Wells Opera, which later changed its name to English National Opera (ENO) in 1974. ENO continues to be a major tenant of the theatre, with the company buying the freehold of the building for £12.8 million in 1992. The theatre underwent a significant restoration between 2000 and 2004, returning to its original Edwardian decoration and adding new public spaces. Today, the London Coliseum remains a prominent cultural venue, hosting a range of performances from award-winning musicals to classical ballet productions.
