AAP is an organization of 67,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatricians and pediatric surgeons dedicated to the health, safety and well-being of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. Established in 1930, AAP consists of 35 pediatricians as an independent BBS to meet the health needs of children. At the time, the idea that children had unique developmental and health needs was new. Standard preventive care (ie, immunisation, regular health checks) is only now beginning to change the way children are treated as "micro-adults". The college also has a pediatric history center, which collects and archives materials related to children. There is also the history of pediatrics in the United States and Canada and the history of the academy itself.
